The banquet was the symbol of social belonging. Both in ancient Greece and in ancient Rome luxury was a sign of belonging to the most affluent classes. In the Middle Ages, however, the concept was quite similar, only in that case the lords flaunted wealth and the banqueting rooms became a sort of stage, richly decorated and set up. Today these distinctions are no longer present but we see the expansion of the use of hotels, restaurants and villas for the organization of parties and the birth of modern catering and banqueting services.
